Gait speed and interdisciplinary intervention in hospitalized older adults
J Lat Am Geriatric Med 2019; 5(2)  : 44-51

Resumen

Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the role of gait velocity as a predictor of functional recovery and the importance of the multidisciplinary team in hospitalized older adults.

Materials and methods: A historical, fixed, correlation cohort of 152 patients was evaluated. It was developed in the geriatrics service of the National Police Hospital in Quito, during the period from May 2014 to September 2014. Demographic data were obtained from the unique medical records, and patients were evaluated using the comprehensive geriatric evaluation scales: Barthel Index, Mini-Mental test, Tinetti scale, Charlson Comorbidity Index, and gait speed measurement in 6 m in two moments; on admission and hospital discharge.

Results: A statistically significant association (p < 0.05) was found with all the study variables.

Conclusions: The improvement in gait after multidisciplinary intervention during hospitalization was relevant, gait speed was a predictor of reliable hospital stay, those patients with low rates of gait on admission remained hospitalized for a longer period of time.
