Ovarian cancer has become an important health problem due to its frequency as well as to the complexity of its diagnosis and treatment. The heterogeneous group of neoplasms that encompass ovarian cancer represents 4% of all cancers diagnosed and are the cause of 5% of deaths due to cancer worldwide. Mexico is not exempt from these statistics, as reported by the latest update of the Mexican Histopathological Registry of Neoplasms, in which nearly 4,000 new cases of ovarian cancer were identified and for which the age of presentation was between 50 and 70 years. Due to its mortality, malignant neoplasms of the ovary have constituted (for several years now) the group of gynecological tumors exerting the greatest economic and social impact, even displacing tumors of the cervix. Facing this reality, the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología of Mexico has joined international efforts to contain this phenomenon. This includes how to achieve better knowledge of tumor biology, this initiating detection and treatment measures.
