Vaccines habe been one of the major medical and public health successes in their ability to prevent disease caused by certain infectious agents. Despite these past successes, it is important to continue to develop additional vaccines that will prevent other infections. Clearly, we have very important pathogens ahead of us: HIV, hepatitis C virus, and many of the herpes viruses, for which we have no vaccines. In this article I will discuss the classical forms of vaccines, current research on vaccines, and where I see vaccine research going in the future. I will first discuss the general background about viral vaccines, then look at how have used a certain type of virus as an example of the newest approaches for designing viral vaccines, and how we hope to improve on current vaccines.
