In France several organisations are currently reflecting on aspects of STAT laboratory organisation that are required as a result of national hospital reforms. STAT laboratory organisation will also evolve with changes in clinical demand, and with the impact of products that are in development. This paper includes some elements from the activities of two of these organisations, presented here in order to stimulate reflection on appropriate solutions for local requirements for STAT testing. The two organisations are: - The CNEH (National Centre for Hospital Equipment), which provides consulting services to public hospitals, including organisational advice, and monitors commercial and scientific developments to anticipate organisational opportunities. - The SFBC (Société Francaise of Biologie Clinique), which is a national association of laboratory professionals, similar to the AMBC (Asociación Mexicana de Bioquímica Clínica), and has a Working Group on Blood Gases and Biosensors part of the Committee on Analytical Systems (chairman: JP Yvert).
