INTRODUCTION The gastrointestinal tract has been the site of extensive investigations of nutritional pharmacotherapeutic agents. Nutritional pharmacotherapy is defined as the use of drugs to modify the metabolic environment of the host; and the administration of selected nutrients which frequently produce effects similar to drugs, rather than nutritionally mediated responses per se. In some instances, nutritional pharmacotherapy consists of giving drugs and nutrients together to provide either an additive or synergistic response in host cells and tissues. Examples of nutritional pharmacotherapeutic agents include dietary fiber, as a precursor for the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFA), butyrate, and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF). This report discusses the effects of these nutritional pharmacotherapeutic agents into the gut.
