On July 15, 1968, the president of Mexico, Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, created the Mexican Institute of Child Welfare (MICW) to better serve the pediatric patient population. This institute is a decentralized public organization that specializes in pediatrics, pediatric disease research, and professional training through teaching and practice. The MICW Children’s Hospital was inaugurated on November 6, 1970. Years later, given the similarity between the objectives and functions of the MICW Children’s Hospital and the MICW of the National Institute of Child Protection, the two groups were merged into a single administration. On January 13, 1977, the Official Gazette of the Federation decreed the union of the two organizations, including the Children’s Hospital, into the National System for Integral Family Development (DIF).
