The beginning of the Instituto Nacional de Perinatología Isidro Espinosa de los Reyes (National Institute of Perinatology) has been noticeably different from other institutions. Its foundation was not a mere consequence of any development plans, or the foundation of new specialties. It was promoted after a modest maternity clinic well known as La Casa del Periodista (Journalist House), founded in 1921 during the presidency of Álvaro Obregón.
