Resumen

Objective: A diet with high and frequent intake of carbohydrates, especially between meals, increases the risk of nutrition disorders and tooth decay. Besides, during the last years in Mexico, changes in food patterns increased the cases of obesity and overweight in children. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if prevalence of tooth decay is associated to overweight and obesity in the preschoolers in Mexico City. Methodology: A comparative cross-sectional study was made with 189 children aged 3-6 years, conveniently selected from Mexico City Iztapalapa area. Considering body mass index (BMI). children were classified in three groups: 63 with normal weight, 63 with overweight and 63 with obesity. Caries indexes were applied by an observer: dmf-t, dmf-s, as well as the O.leary dental plaque index. Odds ratio, and the χ2 and ANOVA tests, were used to estimate the association. Results: Tooth decay prevalence was 77% for the normal weight group, 84% for the overweight group and 79% for the group with obesity. No association was found between tooth decay prevalence and overweight or obesity, except in the group of obese girls who showed a higher risk of tooth decay compared to boys (OR = 4.24; IC95%: 1.04-17.31, p < 0.05). In the overweight group, deficient hygiene was determinant for this group to show a higher tooth decay affectation versus the other groups (OR = 7.83 IC95% = 1.74-35.21, p = 0.003). Conclusions: High tooth decay prevalence was observed, nevertheless, overweight and obesity were not risk factors for tooth decay.
